Jess X. Snow
Jess X. Snow is a filmmaker, multi-disciplinary artist, poet and cultural worker. Born in Canada, of JiangXi Chinese heritage, through a wide range of mediums and genres—their stories explore migration, surrealism, unwellness in the aftermath of the american dream, Black/Asian intimacies and anti-colonial, abolitionist futures.
Recently named one of Filmmaker Magazine's 25 New Faces of Independent Film, their genre-defying short films,unveil how flawed diasporic people live, heal and refuse with bold visuals and poetic lyricism. Their forthcoming short, ROOTS THAT REACH TOWARD THE SKY (2024) will premiere this fall. Past shorts they wrote and directed include SAFE AMONG STARS (2020), LITTLE SKY (2021) and I WANNA BECOME THE SKY (2023) which screened at BlackStar, BFI Flare, New Orleans, Ann Arbor, Outfest, Toronto Reel Asian (National Film Board of Canada Best Short Award), Durban International Film Festival (Special Mention) and many more. They were a cinematographer and producer on several narrative and documentary films that have screened at festivals including Toronto (TIFF), Palm Springs and Aspen ShortsFests. They are currently in development for their first narrative feature, WHEN THE RIVER SPLIT OPEN, a romantic road movie that participated in the 2023 Cine Qua Non Script Revision Lab.
Jess earned a BFA in film and illustration from Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA in screenwriting and directing from the Graduate Film Program at New York University.
